Fantasy Football: America’s Favorite Hobby

Posted on October 17, 2012, under Uncategorized.

Hobbies are important in life. They give us time to take a break from working, taking the kids to school, comparing car insurance rates at http://www.insurancetown.com/car-insurance/ and all the laborious tasks that hard-working Americans take on every single day.

With more than 20 million participants – a number which continues to grow every year – there may not be a faster growing hobby than fantasy football.

Fantasy football has grown into a 1 billion dollar industry today, but it has much more humbling roots. Back in 1962, three men – Bill Winkenbach, Scott Stirling and Bill Tunnell – created the rules for modern-day fantasy football in New York City’s Milford Plaza Hotel.

Currently, there are several different types of fantasy football leagues.

In a head-to-head league, a team matches up against another team in the league every week. The team whose roster tallies the most point gets awarded a win. Points are scored based on a particular set of rules that are either set by the website or custom made by the league commissioner.

In a total points league, also known as a rotisserie league, standings are determined by total points instead of wins stemming from head-to-head matchups.

“Keeper” leagues are leagues where you either keep some or all of your players from year to year.

If you’ve never played fantasy football, you’re missing out – even if you’re not an NFL fan. At the very least, it’s a great way to have fun with your family and friends.
